Plastic frames for 100% reused

Plastic window frames for 100% reused

"We work a lot with Hemubo in combination with DOOR Architects and are actively involved in the preliminary process," says Jappe Dekker, head of sales Business Market at Schipper Kozijnen.

"We help think about the design, give advice and the assembly plan is also worked out together. Every time we like to take up the challenge to come up with the most sustainable and efficient facade solution together and to improve ourselves again and again. From the beginning, it was clear that circularity was an important spearhead."

Second Life

What makes the project in Purmerend unique is that it involves 100% recycled K-VISION window frames. "The old plastic window frames were supplied and installed by Schipper Kozijnen during a renovation in the 1980s. So how special is it that these window frames are now being replaced and processed by us again? We have given them a second life, literally completing the circle. A real first. Many providers of plastic window frames already use recycled material to some extent, but never before for 100%."

The recycled window frames will last at least 50 years.

Innovative color system

The recycled window frames meet current quality and insulation requirements. Dekker: "They have all the required quality marks and certificates. After extensive testing in production and finishing, we succeeded in making a profile from 100% recycled material. To guarantee the UV resistance of recycled profiles and to give them a luxurious matte look and feel, the profiles are coated all around with the innovative color system proCoverTec. This coating also ensures low soot adhesion, which also makes the window frames maintenance-free."

The lifespan of the recycled window frames is at least 50 years, Dekker assures. "But even by then they can be completely reused. You can recycle the material as many as ten times. So if you add that up, they will easily last a few hundred years. This also means considerable savings in raw materials and costs."

Next Step

After removing the glass, hardware and other steel components, the old plastic frames were ground into granules, from which entirely new profiles were made. There were also wooden window frames in part of the apartment building. These window frames were also reused as the basis for the frames. The glass is already being recycled, but not yet reused in the window frames. "That should be the next step. We are currently at an advanced stage with partners to expand the circular chain with this."

Schipper Kozijnen also actively involved the residents in the project. Dekker: "We showed them in advance which window frames they would get. We also included them in how we were going to carry out the replacement. In addition, we offered a customized solution for the blinds, screens and net curtains on the inside. In this way, we want to keep the residents inconvenienced as much as possible."
