High-quality folding walls and balcony glazing offer facades maximum transparency and openness

Solarlux literally means "sunlight. The company's passion is to provide facades with maximum transparency and openness. For over 35 years, Solarlux has been a specialist in translucent, flexible facade solutions. A high-quality product portfolio of glass folding walls, balcony glazing, roofs and minimalist sliding doors is custom produced in the state-of-the-art production halls at the Solarlux Campus in Melle (D) and delivered to the Dutch market.

Inner-city building with outdoor space

For years, the trend has been to spare the green environment and utilize the urban environment as much as possible. Infill development and restructuring require expertise due to the complexity of these construction processes. Area transformations are on the rise and business parks, obsolete industrial zones and office parks are being converted into residential areas, preferably combined with new work locations and recreation. By far the number one hard criteria of residential consumers in these residential areas is that the apartment must have an outdoor space. Above all, the desired balcony must be spacious enough and the resident considers high quality to be important.

The Valley - Evolution of city life

A high-profile example where the above elements come together perfectly is  The Valley on the Zuidas in Amsterdam, a design by architect Winy Maas of MVRDV. A quirky building with a new form of urban living where the best of both worlds meet: city life in a natural green environment where work, living and relaxation are combined. The name Valley is derived from  the imposing terraced facades. In the living area, some apartments are equipped with Solarlux glass folding walls and balcony glazing to, among other things, shape the interplay between inside and outside.

Specific detailing

The Valley brings together the latest in sustainability, technology and health. The building scores an energy performance coefficient of -0.30. And in terms of design, several facades of the apartments are designed with folding walls. Solarlux produces aluminum folding walls of the Highline type with fold-away corners for this project. Large sash sizes with ultra slim profiles and fold-away corner solutions ensure maximum transparency and can be opened over an angle of 110 to 130 degrees. "Here we offer customization at the top," says Solarlux account manager André Jansen. "After all, all apartments also differ in size and design." In addition to the folding walls, Solarlux also supplies balcony glazing at 63 positions. The Valley is expected to be completed in 2021.

Sound insulation

Another important issue in inner-city construction is sound insulation. Solarlux balcony glazing can provide sound insulation up to Rw 45 dB. In addition to noise reduction, balcony glazing for the outdoor space provides protection from wind and rain. As a result, the balcony can be used by residents almost all year round. The full-width glass elements can be opened with just a few actions, so that the balcony character is maintained in fine weather. Balcony glazing also makes sense from an ecological point of view, because the additional façade shell provides thermal insulation, which leads to energy savings. In addition, considerable savings can be made on maintenance costs because the inner façade is much less exposed to weather influences.
