To prepare the existing shell of the school building for reuse, the asbestos present was remediated. Main contractor Rots Bouw placed this responsibility with the Roseboom Group. This party then proceeded with the demolition.
In Phase I, Roseboom removed the asbestos and performed earthwork around the school for the temporary housing. "In fact, this was an intermediate demolition," says Henk de Kruijff, Roseboom's project manager. "We demolished the hallways and locker rooms around the practice classroom and stripped the inside so that the temporary housing could be placed around the practice classroom. We then completed the construction roads and site layout. Once the bats had finally left the building, we were able to begin demolition, starting with the roof structure and rounding at the front of the building."

An additional challenge was working in an educational environment. During classes - and certainly during exams - noise had to be kept to a minimum. "Everyone understands that this is difficult during demolition work," notes De Kruijff. "Good cooperation with the school and client Rots Bouw is then essential. Now Roseboom has always been a flexible party. Our people are at home in many markets. Besides the demolition and groundwork, they picked up the work on the heat pipe within the project boundaries. That prevents a lot of delays."
For Roseboom, the work is over for now. In Phase II - after completion in 2024 - it will proceed with the demolition of the old school and new site design, including the schoolyard, bicycle parking and parking spaces.
