Existing structure becomes fireproof again

Now that the old Dulon College building has been gutted, the structure must be retested for fire safety. Does the fire safety still meet the current regulations of the Building Code? It is Saber Fire Safety that subjects the entire construction to a professional examination for this purpose.

With new construction, the condition of the structure is usually obvious. With an existing structure, it takes an expert's eye to determine how the structure is constructed, how the building is laid out and where the seals are. Saber Fire Safety will examine 950 linear feet of steel for this purpose and then determine what processing is needed in each area to make Dulon College optimally fire safe. 

Known territory

Renovation projects are familiar territory for Saber Fire Protection. "These projects are actually always special," knows Edgar van Leeuwen, director of Saber Fire Protection. "First the building is completely gutted and then rebuilt from the inside out. For our specialists, that means they work in phases. They study a new section each time and determine what application is needed here. They also apply the current regulations of the Building Code in the process."

There is no lack of knowledge within Saber Fire Safety. Director/owner Van Leeuwen began his career at a manufacturer of fire-resistant coatings and fluids and took several courses in fire protection. Fire safety was the common thread in his career for more than 25 years. In 2016, he started he own company, which now has more than 14 professionals. They think along with property owners and the Dutch construction industry, so that a fire does not spread from one room to another. They seal penetrations in walls, ceilings and floors, make steel structures optimally resistant to collapse and thereby create safe escape routes. "Our people save lives and buildings."
