With a BREEAM Outstanding design certificate in hand, we are currently working hard to raise the implementation to the highest possible level of ambition. The installations play an important role in this. Vink Bouw has engaged BRI Groep from Wateringen to design and implement all technical installations. Not exactly a simple task.
BRI Group has been active in all aspects of installation technology for over a quarter of a century, both in design and execution. That experience comes in handy at the Silos on Zeeburgereiland. The family business is responsible for the climate control systems, electrical engineering (lighting, security, access control, fire alarm systems, and PV panels), data and telecom, sanitary installations, and rainwater drainage.
“Transformations always require more attention than straightforward new construction, for example, and this project involved some additional complications,” says Marco Reibestein, project manager for BRI Group. “For example, you have to deal with the round shape of the silos, which requires quite a few adjustments in the way you work. Furthermore, the facades were closed almost everywhere during the entire construction process, which is logistically difficult. And inside, we are dealing with a lot of steel structures that you encounter in every corner. In that case, a good BIM model is an indispensable tool, otherwise you will inevitably run into problems in practice.”
BRI Group has designed a suitable and sustainable package of installations for this challenging environment. Reibestein: “The project will be energy neutral: to achieve this, the silos will be equipped with their own heat and cold storage installation and PV panels on the roofs. Air handling units connected to a demand-driven ventilation system will ensure a pleasant indoor climate. Rainwater will be collected for flushing the toilets and for the irrigation system for the plants on the communal roof garden.”
