Future residents' thoughts on new residential care complex

Prospective residents contribute thoughts on new residential care complex

Last February, ADS Group started construction of the new Marijke Hiem residential care complex in Heerenveen. The old complex owned by client Meriant was due for replacement and had to be demolished. "During the creation of the new Marijke Hiem residential care complex, the future residents contributed ideas about the interior."

"Together with architect Gortemaker Algra Feenstra and installer Harwig Installation Group, we are building the new complex here, which is fully prepared for the future," says ADS Group project manager Hilde Kruitbos. The new residential care complex will have 94 care studios, divided into ten residential groups. In addition, the complex consists of communal living rooms, a restaurant with a community function and several support and facility rooms including a hairdresser.

Open dialogue

In the design of the interior and the garden, Gortemaker Algra Feenstra supervised the working groups in which the future residents could make their wishes known. "Thanks to this continuously open dialogue with Meriant and the future residents, we ensured that the complex continued to meet the wishes and requirements. And where necessary we were able to make adjustments in time. From a preliminary design, we worked with architect Gortemaker Algra Feenstra and installer Harwig Installatie Groep to further develop Meriant's preliminary design into a building application and implementation design. Meriant also had the requirement that in the future this complex could be converted into single-family homes that could be linked both horizontally and vertically. We took this into account in the design. For example, with the fact that a staircase can be realized in the building."

In the future, these may become single-family homes.

The redevelopment of the care facility involves a "Design & Build" contract, a tender that ADS Group, along with the architect and installer, won in July 2018. At that time, the legal decision was also made that gasless would become mandatory for new construction. "Meriant immediately focused on gasless construction based on this legal decision. This also has to do with the location of this complex in the northern Netherlands; a region where the effects of gas extraction are noticeable." The complex is expected to be completed in May 2020 and occupied from June 2020. ADS Group will then be responsible for the multi-year maintenance of the building and building-related installations.
