Recently, Kingspan Insulated Panels introduced QuadCore™ technology, an insulation core capable of achieving ultra-low lambda values. This technology is now integrated with the Kingspan X-dek™ system, a complete precast flat roof equipped with roof membrane. "This offers savings in material use, lead time and transportation, with a warranty of up to 15 years," said Business Development Manager Josette Suers. "The engineering, production and assembly of the complete roof package is in the hands of Kingspan, relieving building partners of the burden."

'The panel elements are delivered complete on site'
The Quadcore™ core, which is also used in sandwich panels, can achieve the same insulation values with less material. This means that, on balance, less material is needed to meet the thermal requirements, so there is also less transport requirement. Less material use, in addition to being sustainable, is therefore efficient and cost-saving. This premise has driven Kingspan's R&D to several innovations, with the Kingspan X-dek™ system in addition to QuadCore™. Its combination will be rolled out widely by the Irish multinational. Says Suers, "Kingspan X-dek™ 106 is a lightweight prefabricated roof structure for flat roofs - including a roof membrane of your choice, with custom elements. The precast flat roof system can be assembled easily and quickly thanks to the size of the elements and screw assembly from above. This significantly reduces the construction time compared to traditional superstructure systems. In addition, the optimal span of the flat roof system offers the possibility to save on the underlying construction and foundation." Kingspan provides technical support to calculate these savings project-specific and can also work out the laying plan and provide permanent fall protection, as well as rainwater drainage, skylights and PV panels. "We engineer and install the roof product and can provide a full warranty on the total package. A big advantage is that this relieves both end-client and construction partners."

'3,400 sq. ft. per day possible'
All these principles and advantages were applied in the Udea Veghel project, a refrigerated warehouse (BREEAM 'Excellent') for the owner of supermarket chain Ekoplaza, to be delivered this spring. Suers: "People chose Kingspan X-dek™ 106 because of the aforementioned speed and total guarantee." In Veghel, 26,000 m² of roofing system was applied with a QuadCore™ insulation core of 100 millimeters thickness, finished with 2.0 millimeters of TPO roof membrane (high quality plastic with long life span). "The panel elements are delivered complete on site, two days before assembly for planning flexibility, and screwed to the structure from above, so the screws are not visible in the interior. The underside is steel and fitted with insulation-filled cannelures." The delivery was engineered in collaboration with general contractor Van der Heijden and K.I.M. Nederland (refrigeration-freezer insulation system construction). "Thus, the spans and insulation values have been optimized, with an element length of 16.6 meters and an Rc value of 6.15. The Kingspan X-dek™ system combines less use of materials, lower transport costs and shorter lead times, which also gives our partners a good business model. They also include the roofing in their job. Assembly is so efficient that 3,400 sq. ft. per day can be achieved with this system, but builders of steel structures can't keep up with that yet."
