The roofs of the houses in Hollanderwijk are the eye-catchers in this monumental neighborhood. Monumentenstichting Elkien and Monumentenzorg want the roofs to be restored and made more sustainable, and at the same time fully restored to their former glory. From the old Frisian ribbed tiles to the bead frames and overhangs.
In preparation for this extensive job, Hekstra Bedrijven - based in Damwâld, Friesland - first takes numerous photos. This way it becomes clear what the roofers might encounter. Then they insulate and renovate the roof of the test house that the housing corporation has made available for this purpose. "The challenge is in the many, old details, that was immediately clear," says Arjen Brouwer, Hekstra's project manager. "After the renovation, all the lines have to come back together exactly, complete with the monumental connections." After the roof of the test house is approved, Hekstra will renovate the remaining roofs.
Because the Frisian corrugated tiles are no longer available, a producer is being sought who can recreate the monumental tiles in the original, dark color. A ceramic roof tile from Nelskamp will be used at the rear and the striking Frisian corrugated tile at the front. The dormers will be renewed and the gutters with the old bead frames and overhangs restored. Thus, one-third of the roofs have now been renovated.
The renovation project in Hollanderwijk is being carried out by the Hekstra Dakmeesters division, which specializes in renovating roofs, from gutter to chimney and everything in between. Brouwer: "Roofs hold no secrets for us. Whether it concerns maintenance, insulation or renovation, our men can handle it. Hollanderwijk is extra attractive because it also requires craftsmanship from our other business disciplines." The other building disciplines are Hekstra Thatchers, Hekstra Builders and Hekstra Prefab.
