With a brand new 15,000 m² building, Bakkerij BACU in Uden is doubling its floor space in one go on the Loopkant-Liessent business park. The expansion will be used entirely for the production of daily fresh pastries. This allows BACU to use the existing factory, which is right next to the new building, entirely for bread.
BACU supplies daily fresh bread for 120 Jumbo stores and pastries for all Jumbo stores in the Netherlands. The family business has considerable growth ambitions, particularly in the field of daily fresh pastries and in raw materials and semi-finished products. The Bevers Aldenhuijsen Combinatie Uden (BACU) was founded in 1963 and now the fourth generation of Aldenhuijsen is at the helm of the company.
Construction company Van de Ven was the main contractor for the new building on the Liessentstraat. Project Manager Mark Hamers says, "In January 2019 we started with the foundation, just before Christmas we delivered the project structurally. After installing and adjusting the building and process installations, the final delivery took place in March. We developed and completed the new building in a construction team, where we were also responsible for all installation work."

Wet pastry production area.
The building has two floors of 7,200 m² for logistics, production, offices and staff areas and a second floor of 1,000 m² where most of the technical installations are located. The whole building is founded on steel. Hamers: "Soil improvement proved unnecessary after research. The first floor is an all-insulated, 15-cm-thick concrete floor. On top of that we made a shell with a steel construction, hollow-core slab floors and insulated sandwich panels as the facades.
At the offices and staff quarters, the façade is opened up with curtain wall strips. Architect Bureau Pepers added accents there in the form of gold-colored horizontal aluminum slats. The new building is primarily a production site with few offices. However, a large canteen and changing rooms with showers and toilets have been built on the second floor."

Four docks for shipping.
On the first floor are the large production areas for wet pastry and dry pastry, the cold rooms and areas for storage of raw materials, semi-finished and finished products and all logistics functions. The first floor houses the packing/appellation line, as well as the technical equipment for pastry production one floor below. A significant portion of the second floor is still empty and is intended to accommodate future growth. Hamers: "The entire building is equipped with a sprinkler system. BACU wanted large, open spaces so there was hardly any compartmentalization."
BACU's new building is completely finished in accordance with the high standards of the meat, fish and dairy industry. Hamers: "The concrete floors are finished with slope layers in the high, medium and low care categories. Walls and ceilings of production areas and cold stores are constructed of flat sandwich panels, doors are stainless steel and plastic. Of course, everything is easy to keep clean; we leave nothing to chance. In this respect, these kinds of complex food projects are right up our alley."
