Food safety and BREEAM in the lead role

Scelta Products inaugurates its new production site before the end of the year

Scelta Products' new production site in Rilland will be completed before the end of the year. Frozen, deep-fried vegetable snacks are produced here. Although it is a company building, it was given a very distinctive look. It was Bouwraadhuis Architects & Engineers who designed and engineered the building.

Scelta Products is growing at a rapid pace and therefore a third production location is needed where future growth is also possible. Bouwraadhuis also designed and engineered Scelta's first location in Yerseke and the second location in Kruiningen. "So we are growing with the company, so to speak," says director Jeroen Brouwer. "This building is a lot grander than the previous two locations, but it still has its own character. To give the building character, the architect placed the office area above the shipping department. The office has a clear layering with a lot of glass, so that it "opens up" to its surroundings. The office garden overlooks the production hall and access road. The other side of the building is emphasized by the striking glass staff entrance and the company canteen with eye-catching roof terrace. The corporate colors emphasize the various components. You read off exactly what is happening."

The colors and logos give the building an identity that fits Scelta Products.

High demands

It is being built under BREEAM-NL 'Outstanding' certification. This ensures that the requirements are high, but not only that. Food safety is also hugely important, of course. Hygiene has the highest priority at Scelta. Both issues were clearly taken into account in the design, for example in material choices, a high insulation value and the construction method. Brouwer explains: "Everything must be easy to clean, so smooth materials were chosen. The entire routing has been adapted for hygiene. Before you enter the production hall, you are first led through a hygiene sluice to change clothes and wash your hands. No one can just walk into the production hall." Special choices were also made because of BREEAM. For example, coatings with a limited number of volatile substances are used and the steel construction is demountable.

As much as possible is prefabricated so that materials can be reused.

 All on schedule

To manage all this, the complete design was worked out in advance in a BIM model, both architectural and installation. Problems could be solved in advance. The client could virtually walk through the plant and see what it would look like. This way of working ensures that the construction is now running like clockwork, says Brouwer. "The biggest problems have been ironed out beforehand, although of course there are still issues to solve now. By the end of 2022, the site should be up and running, and that is certainly going to happen."

Scelta Products deliberately chooses high-quality panel builder

In Rilland, Roma Netherlands is helping to build a new production site for Scelta Products. It produces frozen vegetable snacks and the refrigeration and freezer areas must therefore meet high standards. Roma supplies the roof, facade and interior walls and doors and assembles everything with its own professionals.

"We started with the cold store, which is being built according to the BREEAM-NL 2020 'Outstanding' certification. Then we started on the processing and storage areas. We are realizing the building with Roma panels, which was a conscious choice of the owner. They wanted extra good quality and insulation," says Bart Hultermans, architectural sales consultant at Roma Netherlands. In total, some 24,000 m2 of panels and 70 doors will be processed by Roma in the project. Roma is working on behalf of Bouwbedrijf Vrolijk in a construction team and has a lot of contact with the owner of Scelta, Hultermans continues. "Together with him we visited reference projects and our company. He chose us because of the high quality and our construction method. It is nice that we were involved at an early stage. This also allowed us to give advice. For each room, we looked at what was needed in terms of food-safe construction and production technology." Roma manufactures and assembles the high-end insulating panels, commercial doors, refrigeration and freezer units itself.
