'Climate systems earned NDC Jumbo valuable BREEAM-NL points'

Commissioned by Bouwbedrijf van de Ven and in accordance with the Program of Requirements of BREEAM expert W4Y, vanPanhuis Hoogeveen, part of the Top Installation Group, was responsible for the design and construction of all mechanical installations in Jumbo's national distribution center (NDC) in Nieuwegein. From the heating installation, cooling installation, heat pumps, air treatment installation, heat recovery installation and control installation to the plumbing and gray water circuit. Particular attention was paid to the climate systems, says project manager Paul Peet. "An automatic Order Picking Machine (OPM) was installed by Witron that generates residual heat, some of which is reused."

"The heat from the Witron plant rises and is captured at a high level by us," Peet says. "Through an air duct, the warm air is then removed and directed to four air handling units, which collectively flush about 150,000 cubic meters of air per hour. A battery in the air handler converts the warm air into hot water, which is stored in a large buffer tank." Three large air-to-water heat pumps were also installed on the roof, with a COP of > 4.3.

Underfloor heating is installed at the front of the national distribution center. "In addition, treated air is blown in through airsocks/textile air ducts. For this we use a twin-coil system, which adds the captured heat back into the air supply. Fan coil units are installed in the offices that provide demand-controlled heating and cooling. The fan coil units are powered by a separate heat pump. In the event of a heat demand, the stored heat from the buffer tank is used first, preventing frequent switching on/off of the heat pumps."

BREEAM-NL

The climate control systems in the NDC earned precious BREEAM-NL points. The same goes for the gray water circuit. Peet: "Part of the rainwater is collected and stored in two large tanks totaling 70,000 m³. After filtering, this water is used to flush the urinals and toilets, keeping water consumption in the NDC to a minimum."

Optimal alignment

"The biggest challenge for vanPanhuis Hoogeveen was to link the climate control systems with the Witron mechanization system in such a way that maximum heat is recovered and optimal climate control is created for people and products," says Peet. "In addition, the planning provided the necessary challenges. In the preparation phase, Jumbo, Bouwbedrijf van de Ven and Witron communicated various dates on which part of the building had to be delivered, so that Witron could start building the OPM system on time. We met all these milestones as well as the recent delivery without any problems."
