A satisfied customer always returns! Having previously developed and designed freezer warehouses in Wakefield (UK) and Rheine (Germany) together with B-Built (Bergen op Zoom), NewCold deliberately chose the same Design & Build partner for its second coldstore in France.
"We have specialized in the design and construction of cold stores and freezers for many years and always strive to completely unburden the customer," says director Martijn Baartmans. "The first contacts with NewCold date back to 2012 and so we have already been able to build up a lot of knowledge together. For this new project, the cold-chain logistics specialist contacted us again."
At the site near Rennes, B-Built is constructing not one large but three smaller high-rise freezer warehouses, each 165 meters long, 36 meters wide and 35 meters high. For the design, the general contractor worked with established partners such as ABT and GJM, as well as local parties.
"The first design according to the standard concept, based on one warehouse with oxygen reduction as fire prevention, was rejected by the local government. Therefore, we switched to three smaller buildings, which ultimately creates a unique look," explains project manager Geert van Tiem. "The warehouses are supported by a foundation of piles and are based on a steel structure, clad with highly insulated roof and wall panels. The front layer buildings consist of a prefab construction with concrete columns and beams and sandwich panels for walls and roofs, with the exception of the offices where a striking black curtain wall was chosen."
Implementation began in mid-December 2019 and the first pallets will be stored in the warehouse by the end of March 2021.
"The long wait for the necessary permits, poor weather conditions at the start of construction work and the impact of COVID-19 only make this project more challenging. We are therefore proud that we will be able to realize this beautiful project within the agreed deadline," Baartmans and Van Tiem say in chorus. "This is only possible through open communication with all parties and through the efforts of our own people, the team from NewCold, the side contractors such as SSI Schaefer, TGW, Engie and Eiffage and our subcontractors, including Isocab Construct, ASK Romein and Twintec.
