The former Rehoboth School building was completely renovated. Twelve classrooms, four childcare rooms and a learning square were added. Karbouw construction company took care of the renovation and expansion of the old building.
Karbouw construction company specializes in the redevelopment of existing real estate, building schools and new construction in infill areas. The employees go for quality, think with the client and give advice. Karbouw was therefore the preferred construction partner on this project. "We often work with projects in an existing environment, where local residents, logistics and involved parties must be taken into account," says director Marco Berger. "We made good agreements with the municipality and the surrounding area and constantly kept local residents informed. For example, we also continued during the construction period. We can limit the nuisance, but not keep it away; you can hear a drill. Good communication is important then."

The entire building was gutted, then a wood-frame floor was added to the existing building. To ensure that the new floor matched the existing building, everything was digitally measured. This was because the existing school had arisen from various extensions and conversions, which meant, for example, that the different floor heights differed from each other. Karbouw ensured that it once again became a single-floor building.
Both the existing section and the new building received a completely new interior and installation, bringing the school up to the latest building requirements.
Berger: "There is no longer a gas connection and the building is equipped with heat pumps, solar panels on the roof and a WTW system that complies with the Fresh Schools principle." The first thing you notice when you step into the IKC is the light colors and sense of space. Natural materials and lots of windows were chosen. An air purification system ensures an optimal indoor climate. Outside is a spacious playground with also many natural materials. Sliding walls and a learning square allow for group work.

Construction began in November 2019 and the IKC was completed in late 2020. Despite the challenges of staying within budget, getting everything finished on time and inconveniencing local residents as little as possible, the process went extremely well, Berger says. "We still have good contact with the school, the architect and the consultants. All of us are enthusiastic and we are still waiting for the opportunity to raise our glasses. We also had very fine subcontractors, consisting of our regular partners. We are super proud of the result and you notice in the communication with the school that they are proud and happy with the new building."
