48,000 sq. ft. of insulation panels for NewCold's new freezing facility in Corby

Koel Isolatie Maatschappij (K.I.M.) Nederland B.V. is the market leader in the realization of cold and freezer storage and production spaces for food products. "We have specialized in the realization of conditioned spaces for more than half a century," says Elbert Jan Drieënhuizen, Commercial Director of K.I.M. Nederland B.V. "In doing so, we take all the work off clients' hands. In the preliminary phase, we actively help think about the best project-specific applications. We then take care of the (3D/BIM) drawing, calculations, delivery and assembly of the components, which we purchase exclusively from renowned suppliers. This ensures the best performance in sustainability, airtightness, safety and food hygiene."

Leading projects like in Corby require leading partners. Also when it comes to the (sandwich) exterior walls, interior walls, ceilings, floors, interior doors, lock doors, window frames, roofing and rainwater drains. "In the past, we have already completed several projects for NewCold and B-Built, including in Wakefield (UK) and Rheine (Germany). And also in Corby, commissioned by B-Built, we have entered into another great partnership," says Drieënhuizen. "What is special about NewCold's latest freezing facility is that it is silo construction. The scaffold structure of the 42.6-meter-high fully automated cold store also forms the building's supporting structure. Whereas we normally make an insulating shell around the steel structure before the racking is placed in the building, in this project the insulation panels for facades and roofs were screwed to the racking structure. A separate steel structure was not required, maximizing occupancy."

The best insulating panels currently available in the market were chosen in Corby. "The facades, roofs, interior walls and ceilings of both the high-rise warehouse and the front building are fitted with high-quality insulation panels from Isocab by Kingspan, with a patented QuadCore insulation core and in a variety of thicknesses and (color) finishes," says Drieënhuizen. "The QuadCore hybrid rigid foam not only excels in thermal insulation performance, but also makes a superior contribution to fire safety and durability. Moreover, because the insulation panels are produced in the UK and are considerably thinner than comparable products, it was possible to save substantially on logistical movements and associated CO2 emissions."

To keep the cold in the refrigeration and freezer rooms and reduce energy consumption to a minimum, the building features sophisticated air sealing. "This high-quality air sealing also makes a positive contribution to the building's fire safety," Drieënhuizen said. "By bringing the oxygen level to 16 á 17%, a fire cannot occur. Moreover, barriers due to compartmentalization are not an issue."
