Contemporary comfort and monumental value come together in the New Church

From monument to city church

For nearly 650 years, the Nieuwe Kerk has been the beating heart of Delft, as a sacred, cultural and shared place. To maintain this function into the future, the church will be adapted and redecorated in three phases. Above the current store there will be a new floor and multifunctional hall of approximately 70 m2, which will be fully equipped for meetings and gatherings. In addition, new toilet groups and a new kitchenette will be added at the level of the sacristy, libry and side entrance. Klimaatservice Holland BV will take care of the mechanical installations, whereby contemporary comfort and monumental value come together in an excellent way.

“Most project requests start with our Design & Calculation department,” says Teus Boogaard, project manager at Klimaatservice Holland BV. “For the renovation and refurbishment of the Nieuwe Kerk, however, the seed was planted earlier. Between 2013 and 2017, the Nieuwe Kerk was extensively renovated and rebuilt, during which we replaced the entire heating system, installed new air handling units and installed underfloor heating. Because of this, the Protestant Municipality of Delft (PGD) was already well acquainted with Klimaatservice Holland BV. In the summer of 2025 we joined the construction team and together with the client and building contractor we worked out the installations for the refurbishment
and formalized.”

High comfort, low energy consumption

Implementation began in October 2025, says Boogaard. “For the air conditioning of the new hall, we install an air/water heat pump, which supplies heat and cold to the underfloor heating and floor cooling. In addition, a small air handling unit with heat recovery will be installed, which meets the ventilation needs in a very energetic way. As a result, room comfort and energy efficiency come together nicely. Because the installation components are incorporated into the wooden floor as much as possible, the full attention of visitors goes to the church building.”

Existing air ducts eliminated

New toilet groups and a kitchenette have been added in the North and South transepts, for which Klimaatservice Holland BV is providing all the plumbing and air conditioning. “A challenge here was the existing air ducts from 2016, which had to be moved to create enough space for the toilet groups. But at the same time, this was an opportunity to eliminate the ducts, which were disrupting the image of the church, in a beautiful way. We enlarged the existing trenches in the approximately one-meter-thick church walls to 1.7 meters wide and sixty centimeters deep for this purpose. Then the walls were closed again in the style of yesteryear, harmonizing technology and appearance in this area as well.”
