Department of Rebuilding, Maintenance and Renovation builds strong portfolio in store renovations

Simultaneously with the thorough renovation of De Lijnbaan shopping street in Rotterdam, the JD Sports sports store on Lijnbaan also underwent a transformation. TBI company J.P van Eesteren - more specifically the Verbouw, Onderhoud en Renovatie (VOR) department - completely renovated the building on both the outside and inside. A striking detail here is the facade, which will again feature a work of art made of glass appliqué, a semi-transparent panel with backlighting. The technique is based on the historical images of Lijnbaan 91.

Among other things, JD Sports received a new transparent storefront. On the building's two floors - in addition to a basement floor - came steel facades with Ekosite facade elements with the original look. Inside, mezzanine floors were removed and the second floor was extended to make three equal floors. In total, the store now has 1542 m2 surface. Two escalators were installed in the center, connecting at the top to a new glass floor. The rear façade also received a new escape stairwell, and the original shipping doors were reinstated. In line with restoring the original appearance, all non-monumental finishes were removed.

Environmentally aware

Building on a busy shopping street requires an environmentally conscious approach. The work took into account the opening hours of surrounding stores. Low-noise structural demolition was also carried out. In addition, there was hardly any space on the construction site for storage of materials, so it was necessary to supply materials just-in-time.

Store expertise

The renovation of JD Sports coincides with a major renovation project of De Lijnbaan. This shopping street has been a national monument since 2010 and is being restored to its former glory; with modern facilities encased in a monumental appearance. In total, J.P. van Eesteren is renovating 878 m2 to awnings. In addition to the JD Sports building, J.P. van Eesteren has also renovated a number of other retail properties. J.P. van Eesteren's VOR department has now built up a strong portfolio in the construction and renovation of shopping centers and individual retail properties of varying sizes throughout the Netherlands.
