Works Trekfietsviaduct in The Hague enter final phase

Construction of the Trekfietsviaduct - part of the Trekfiets route from Ypenburg to The Hague - is entering the final phase. On two consecutive nights - August 8 to 10 - Hillebrand installed the steel bridge components on behalf of main contractor Dura Vermeer. The client (Municipality of The Hague) is looking forward to the commissioning of the burg scheduled for late October.

While Dura Vermeer made the seven concrete piers and the two temporary supports, Hillebrand was responsible for the production and assembly of the bridge parts themselves, totaling about 900 tons of steel. The bridge components were manufactured at the Middelburg and Vlissingen sites and were transported by ship and road to The Hague where they were given their final location.

More than the sum of its parts

Given the length of the viaduct, as much as 330 meters, it consists of several parts. Parts A and B were installed above the highway lane on the night of Aug. 8-9 after being manufactured in Middelburg. Bridge parts C and D followed on the night of Aug. 9-10 and run above the entrance and exit lanes of the highway. Both bridge sections were produced by Hillebrand in Flushing, Flushing. Sections E through I run alongside the highway and will be installed in September and October.

Sustainable mobility

The Trekfietsviaduct contributes to smart mobility in and around The Hague. It forms the last link in the Trekfietsstrait, which runs from Ypenburg to the center of The Hague. The sustainable character is reinforced by the installation of a so-called 'solar tree', a pole on which several solar panels have been placed. The electricity generated by these is used for the economical LED lighting used to illuminate the bridge. This makes the viaduct completely energy-neutral.

Finishes and bridge furniture

Now that the basic construction is complete, the end of the works is in sight. In addition to the aforementioned solar tree, the bridge will include windbreaks and a handrail with integrated LED lighting.

Expected work completion date: end of October 2019.
