Public elementary school Bloemhof and Pantarijn will soon move into a new school building on 2e Balsemienstraat in Rotterdam-Zuid: De Bloementuin. The three-story new building of approximately 2,480 m2 was built all-electric and nearly energy-neutral (BENG). “The soil energy system with heat pumps and the PV panels on the roof make an important contribution to this,” says Erik de Bruijn, project leader E and W at Barth Installatietechniek. “In combination with a central ventilation system and LED lighting with a minimum of 500 lux in the classrooms, the requirements of Fresh Schools Class B are also met.”
Barth Installatietechniek has years of experience in the design and realization of mechanical and electrical installations. The South Holland total installer is a much sought-after (construction team) partner in the industrial, non-residential construction, (semi-)government, office, healthcare and education sectors and values long-term relationships with clients, such as Middelwateringbouw. “Commissioned by this contractor, we realized all the common installations for elementary school De Bloementuin,” says De Bruijn. “From sewerage to water pipes, sanitary installations, climate installations, lighting, solar panels, data installation, intercom installation, burglar alarm and the fire alarm system.”

“What is special is that the new school has a ground source heat system with heat pumps, which allows very energetic heating and cooling,” he says. “Heat and cold are extracted from the ground source and delivered to a water-to-water heat pump in the technical room. In addition, we installed two air-to-water heat pumps on the roof of the new school. Underfloor heating in combination with reheaters in the central ventilation system was chosen as the delivery system in the building. This guarantees an optimal learning and working climate in all rooms, while at the same time keeping energy consumption under control. In combination with a large number of solar panels on the roof, the new building will soon function as a solar energy system.
nearly zero-energy.”
Biggest challenge in this work involved logistics, says De Bruijn. “The new school is located in the heart of Rotterdam-Zuid. Moreover, it was built on a postage stamp, which required careful planning and close coordination. But we don't shy away from this either. With completion in sight, we look back on another wonderful educational project in collaboration with Middelwateringbouw.”
