ERA Contour first to get scaffolding materials supplied entirely green

Logistics hubs enable zero-emission transport to Rotterdam construction site

As the very first company in the Netherlands, TBI company ERA Contour will have the scaffolding materials on the House of Inspiration new construction project in Rotterdam supplied entirely green. The developing builder has joined the Logistiek 010 initiative of the Municipality of Rotterdam, which focuses on efficient and emission-free inner-city transport. On Tuesday, April 30, the 3rd freight was transported from the logistics hub to the construction site in Nieuw Crooswijk.

"We joined the initiative of the Municipality of Rotterdam because we would like to contribute to a cleaner city and the optimization of construction transport," said Job van Zomeren of ERA Contour. In the initiative, the municipality is working with a number of builders and transporters, with the aim of minimizing emissions from transport within the city. By setting up logistics hubs, centralized storage sites outside the city, it will eventually be possible to make transport within the city completely emission-free.

Improved air quality and accessibility
With Logistics 010 government and the business community are working together to promote sustainable solutions that improve the air quality and accessibility of Rotterdam's inner city. Jos Streng, advisor at the Municipality of Rotterdam, says: "as a municipality we believe it is important to set a good example ourselves. First of all in the transport we carry out ourselves for waste collection, for example. But also by encouraging sustainable logistics in our purchasing policy. Together with Oslo and Copenhagen we are working in the EU project BuyZET (Buy Zero Emission Transport) towards a common goal: in steps towards completely emission-free goods transport in the city. An example like this, where different parties are making efforts to contribute to that goal, is a very nice and important step in the right direction."

Emission-free

Electric trucks with many advantages
Together with TBI sister company MDB, supplier of the scaffolding materials, and carrier Breytner, ERA Contour made agreements to transport the scaffolding materials needed on the construction project in Nieuw Crooswijk without emissions. Electric trucks are used for this purpose. These can carry less weight than "standard" trucks, so smaller quantities are delivered at once than normal. "That means even more just-in-time deliveries. For us, this is an additional advantage because it means less storage space is needed on the construction site. Especially with inner-city projects, this is essential" said Van Zomeren. Streng adds: "And because the trucks are electric, they don't produce any noise. A nice added benefit in the busy inner city and certainly for the residents near the construction site."

Also talking to other suppliers
The first green transport of scaffolding materials arrived at the construction site of the House of Inspiration project on Tuesday, April 16. The total amount of scaffolding materials will be delivered over several months. Meanwhile, ERA Contour is also in talks with suppliers of other building materials to explore the possibilities for emission-free and efficient transport through the logistics hubs.
