An important change in the 2012 Building Code in the area of fire safety is the requirement that apartment doors opening into a common hall or corridor must be self-closing in the event of a fire. Previously, this only applied to apartment entrance doors in porch situations, but the requirement now also applies to fire-resistant apartment entrance doors adjacent to a corridor, for example.

Advice for freewheeling closer

When a standard door closer is used in daily use on a residential entrance door, practical and physical inconvenience is experienced. In practice, this often leads to the standard door closer becoming inoperative and this creates the risk that self-closing in the event of a fire is no longer guaranteed. For this reason, GEZE recommends the use of a smoke detector or smoke detector-controlled free swing door closer on a residential entrance door. This free swing door closer does not constitute an obstruction when used under normal conditions and is only activated in the event of a fire. The smoke detector or smoke detector-controlled GEZE free swing door closer is available in several installation variants, from surface-mounted to flush-mounted and with integrated smoke detector or with separate smoke detector.

Control with fail-safe function

For the control of the free swing door closer GEZE has a versatile range available including the integrated smoke detector, the standard powered 230V smoke detector in wired version and the wireless smoke detector. All versions are equipped with fail-safe function according to EN2535. The maintenance of this smoke detector or detector controlled free swing door closer falls under the duty of care of article 2.6 and should be inspected annually.
