Platform on new construction, renovation, restoration and transformation
Van den Pol Elektrotechniek designs, installs, maintains and manages electrical installations, industrial automation, security systems and ICT networks. In addition, the company offers comprehensive solutions for sustainability, grid congestion, lighting maintenance and safety inspections. What began in December 1935 as a small family business has grown into a prominent electrical engineering specialist in five business units: industrial automation, utility construction, residential construction, retail and service & maintenance. Together with director Wim van den Pol, we look back on ninety years of development, entrepreneurship and passion.
On December 16, 1935, grandfather Willem van den Pol started a small installation company in plumbing and electrical work. At the time, Van den Pol knows, this was still a fairly new field. “After all, in most homes, one outlet, one switch and one lamp were enough. From a shed in Montfoort, he mainly made installations for homes, the nursing home and the farmers” cooperative. In doing so, he worked mostly on behalf of local contractors, a number of which are still customers today." As was common in those days, the installation business soon expanded to include its own store, where Grandma Van den Pol sold lamps, vacuum cleaners and washing machines, among other things.
“My grandfather was a true craftsman,” says Van den Pol. “Whereas in the summer he installed buildings around the neighborhood, in the winter he focused mainly on prefab plumbing work. For example, he prepared gutters and drainpipes in advance. In addition, people could come to him for all kinds of maintenance and repair work.” Much of this work has remained unchanged, he emphasizes. “We still work with cables, pipes and wall sockets. It's just that the components are getting smarter and smarter. To keep up with this, we need lifelong learning. For example, to keep up with developments around sustainability, circular construction and building with wood, where we can always fall back on our extensive experience.” As an example, he cites wood construction projects such as SAWA and Pearl in the Polder, for which the company went back to grandfather's craft. “In fact, the homes he installed also had wooden frames and wooden floors. A great starting point, which we optimized with contemporary techniques such as wireless switching and intelligent plug connections.”
”As an organization, we like to approach projects as directly and simply as possible,” Van den Pol says. “We love working LEAN and First Time Right. But also on working sustainably. Not for nothing does ‘smart and sustainable’ also appear on the back of our company buses. In the coming years we want to expand this further, so that machines and buildings become ever smarter and more efficient. But also safer, thanks to our security systems. Important here is that the buildings remain comprehensible to their users.”
These buildings relate not only to residential construction, but to all the markets in which the company now operates. A development started in 1968 when father Gijs van den Pol took over the electrical branch and store of the company. “The plumbing branch was taken over by my uncle, which allowed my father to focus completely on everything that ‘has a wire to it,’” says Van den Pol, who describes his father as a ‘true entrepreneur.
“In the thirty years that followed, the company expanded considerably. For example, with large-scale housing construction, for which the expansions of Nieuwegein, Houten, Utrecht Leidsche Rijn and IJsselstein were nice incentives. In 1978 we moved to the industrial area in Montfoort, where we are still located. In addition, we opened a new branch in Amersfoort in 1991.”
In 1989 Wim van den Pol joined the company and in 1998 he took over. Under his wings, countless beautiful and special buildings are created where people can work, live and store pleasantly, comfortably and safely. In addition, Van den Pol Elektrotechniek expands into industry. “Following the steel industry and plastic recycling, we serve many clients in the potato processing industry,” he says. “Not only in the Netherlands, but worldwide we provide the consultancy and engineering of the eyes, ears and intelligence of the factories. We also write the software and build control panels, ensuring efficient production and processes.”
Van den Pol Elektrotechniek is a much sought-after partner in utility construction and retail. The company is also still strong in residential construction, with approximately one thousand residential installations per year. Within the aforementioned business units, Van den Pol Elektrotechniek provides both electrical and security installations. From fire alarm systems to burglary protection, access control systems and camera security. “With buildings increasingly functioning as technical machines, the demand for service and maintenance is also growing,” said Van den Pol. “We can provide excellent service for this as well, which also applies to issues of sustainability and energy management. We have had a ‘green team’ since 2009, which actively investigates and implements the sustainable possibilities within our business units and projects. Next year, we will be installing solar panel systems on building roofs for thirty years (!). And also for energy management systems, energy storage and EV charging facilities, Van den Pol Elektrotechniek is an excellent choice.”
With its anniversary, Van den Pol Elektrotechniek proves that ninety years is wise, but not old. Provided you keep developing continuously. “As a company, we evolve flexibly along with our clients and society,” Van den Pol emphasizes. “Moreover, we are strongly committed to young talent. We have had our own company school for twenty years, where our own teachers have already trained more than two hundred young men and a number of women for our profession.” That Van den Pol is not only a place to grow, but also to feel at home, is proven by long tenures of 10, 30, 40 or even 50 years. “Our motto is nice work with nice people. This applies to our own employees as well as to our suppliers and customers. As an organization, we don't turn our noses up at anything. We enjoy working on small as well as large and complex projects, such as the new headquarters for Booking.com or ING. It is precisely the variety that keeps us motivated and sharp. Now and in the future.”
