From building shell construction to fine details, the Stieva Metaal Group is rock solid in custom metal. Also in the expansion of Mammoet in Schiedam, which it is carrying out on behalf of Daiwa House Modular Europe Jan Snel B.V. There, the company proves it is not averse to a challenge. Project leader Stefan Bos takes us through the project.
Next to the Bolder, Mammoet's characteristic round building, the company will get a new building including a parking garage. The old and new buildings will be connected by a walkway, equipped with facades.
"The biggest challenge was probably that walkway," Bos said. "That runs from the first to the second floor. So there's a slope in it, and that requires quite a bit of thought regarding the details, fire resistance, air sealing and waterproofing. In addition, the Bolder is a round building. That doesn't make it easy to attach a bridge to it." Stieva also has to contend with the elements. "You're on salt water there, so you have to take corrosion into account. The new building stands on columns that are galvanized and filled with concrete for fire safety reasons. In addition, it blows hard, especially at the height of the footbridge. Engineers must be able to do their work there safely and, of course, the bridge must be able to withstand the wind. Finally, the bridge must meet the appropriate fire safety rating."
The expansion involves many parties coming together and working with an existing round building. That requires a lot of puzzling. Good planning and close cooperation between different parties is essential. "So far, the project is going flawlessly, both in terms of planning and construction. Everything fitted at once. If you think carefully beforehand, the rest of the project becomes an efficient construction kit for the mechanics, but in a big way."
Now that the first parts are finished, Bos can already look back with satisfaction. "Because of the expansion there is more office space, but also a nice big canteen. That worked out well. The other day I saw the pictures going by. A lot of people work there, they now have a very nice space to get together. That makes it all worth it."
