New building in Kampen offers growth opportunities

For 85 years, Van der Sluis Technical Companies has been located on the Kamperzeedijk in Genemuiden. In April this year, the construction branch moved to brand new premises in Kampen.

Van der Sluis Technische Bedrijven started in 1934 as a wheelwright shop and grew into a successful business, with three operating companies: Van der Sluis Installation, Van der Sluis Agri and Van der Sluis Construction. At the helm is René van der Sluis, who already represents the third generation of the family business.

Residential, utility and offshore

Van der Sluis Constructie is headed by company manager Arend van der Kamp. "We have focused on residential and commercial construction from the beginning," he says. "In recent years we have also been increasingly active in other sectors. Among other things, we manufacture landings, fencing, stairs, canopies, works of art and trusses, as well as steel structures in all common shapes and parts required by the on- and offshore industry. High quality and the customer's wishes always come first."

Total approach offers added value

"Our quality goes beyond the products we manufacture," Van der Kamp continues. "With our own salespeople, engineers, work planners, production staff, assembly teams and transport facilities, we keep the entire process, and therefore its quality and progress, under control. More and more clients, architects and structural engineers see the added value of our total approach. In more and more projects, we are already involved in the preliminary phase to help think about a particular construction or aesthetic solution. For example, we have prefabricated fencing in our range that meets today's high architectural requirements due to its seamless appearance, without being more expensive than, for example, the well-known strip fencing."

New home on the N50

In Genemuiden, Van der Sluis Constructie had a production space of about 1,800 square meters. "Over the years we kept growing out of that," says Van der Kamp. "In April this year, we therefore moved to new premises four times the size. Unfortunately, this was not possible in Genemuiden, but we found a wonderful alternative at industrial park RW50 in Kampen. A spacious plot at an easily accessible high-profile location on the N50. From there you are on the highway in no time and drive to Amsterdam in an hour."

Lots of space, pleasant working environment

The new, architect-designed building in Kampen has a production area of over 7,000 square meters and 26 overhead cranes with a lifting capacity of 50 tons. Great attention has been paid to sustainability and comfort. For example, underfloor heating and cooling, fed by 37 wells some 275 meters deep, ensure a pleasant and constant temperature in the construction hall. Furthermore, skylights, light colors and noise-reducing measures contribute to a pleasant working environment.

Faster, more accurate, more complex

"Not only in the building, but we also invested heavily in technology," says Van der Kamp. "For example, we purchased a blasting machine. All products are now blasted, resulting in much less contamination and higher weld quality. We also invested in a drilling machine, a plasma cutter and a fully automatic saw, among other things. All machines that allow us to produce even faster and more accurately. We can also handle more complex shapes." For the building in Kampen, Van der Sluis Constructie had to recertify for the NEN-EN-1090 standard because it is site-specific. The EXC 2 certification held in Genemuiden is now  upgraded to EXC 3. For welding, Van der Sluis Constructie is certified in accordance with NEN-EN-ISO 3834-2.

Future

"The new building in Kampen provides us with sufficient space and opportunities to grow," Van der Kamp summarizes. "Given the large surface area and state-of-the-art machinery, we can expand even further and flesh out our future plans. For example, we want to turn a little more to specialized steel construction. Our ultimate goal is that by deploying the latest machinery and innovations, we can serve our clients optimally from a pleasant working environment that meets the requirements of today and tomorrow. We are ready for the future."
