Traditional techniques in window and glazing replacement

Hollanderwijk's windows and glazing are being replaced and painted. Now this process does take place somewhat differently for a national monument than for a standard renovation project. Both the wood repair work and the painting are done in the traditional way. Van der Geest Schilderspecialisten has made this its specialty.

For the renovation of Hollanderwijk, Van der Geest Schilderspecialisten - based in Leeuwarden - was given a twofold assignment. The windows and glazing of the monumental premises had to be made energetically sustainable. Van der Geest Schilderspecialisten was free to use the most innovative products for this, provided the monumental elements were preserved. In addition, a systematic maintenance plan was required. The wood had to be optimally protected and preserved.

Fineo Vacuum Glass

To preserve the glazing, Van der Geest Schilderspecialisten had to deal with the minimum cavity width present in the windows. To still achieve the required insulation value, it installed the ultra-thin Fineo Vacuum glass. "Fineo is the new generation of insulating glass," says Jelle Walda, co-owner of Van der Geest Schilderspecialisten. "It is extremely thin and, thanks to vacuum technology, has very high thermal and acoustic qualities." After installation, the glass is sealed with a durable elastic putty, or the environmentally friendly replacement for traditional "putty.

Durable varnish

To provide durable protection for the woodwork, Van der Geest Schilderspecialisten chooses the 'Sigma Allure Gloss'. This paint is known as one of the most durable paints of the moment and protects the wood, especially in the long run. Walda: "We are now specialized in applying the Fineo Vacuum Glass and traditional painting techniques. Our craftsmen love working in this traditional way. It is more labor intensive, but they are on the scaffolding with a big smile."
