Healthy living and working: 'Buildings and installations must move more with developments in the market'

Moreover, sustainability and energy transition must take more and better shape in cities in particular. Hiensch Engineering B.V. is happy to contribute to this. "We strongly endorse the long-term task," emphasizes DGA Jan Sier. "However, because of this focus, other aspects such as health, livability and safety are still sometimes subordinated to energy savings and new ways of circular construction."

Hiensch Engineering B.V.'s vision has always been to develop good healthy buildings. This applies to both commercial and residential buildings, Sier said. "Our focus here is on light and air. In addition to the application of sufficient natural light, we actively seek solutions to blow in as much fresh air as possible; variably controllable based on actual need and with good filtration by centrally located air handling units." In both offices and residential buildings in inner-city locations, such as right on the highway, good filtration of air is also essential. "By centralizing systems and keeping them out the front door, more control over maintenance and management can take place. Instead of placing responsibility on the users, this actually provides a service to occupants and office workers."

Simple and clear operation

There is also much room for improvement in the operation of installations, Sier says. "Installations are an increasingly important part of the building and sustainable installations are often more complicated in terms of design and control. Hiensch Engineering B.V. finds it important that residents and/or office workers continue to have simple and clear controls. The ability to influence your own environment is important, but basically the installations themselves must provide comfort without complicated controls. Installations must also continue to function when technology updates again. Corona painfully exposes the sting once again: due to the focus on investment costs and energy savings, health and comfort in schools and nursing homes, among others, have been sidelined in recent years. Many buildings suffer from complicated technical systems on which users can hardly intervene. Surely that cannot be the intention?"

Moving with changing needs

"The real way of sustainable construction for us is to develop robust buildings and installations that can move with the changing needs in the market and in which people can stay healthy for long periods of time," Sier said. "Offices are increasingly changing from permanent workplaces to meeting and innovation centers. Homes, in turn, are changing from places to sleep to family environments, semi-permanent work environments and long-term care stays. It's up to us to develop concepts that can meet all these needs."
