Renovation of Ballast Nedam headquarters requires tight interplay on the floor

‘Everyone put their shoulders to the wheel’

When renovating Ballast Nedam's headquarters in Utrecht, several challenges came together on the floor. Leveling, carpet tiles and cast floors: PMR Projectstoffering was able to showcase all kinds of specialties while not losing sight of the schedule.

The application went through &CREW, a party that PMR works with more often. In the process, Heddes Bouw & Ontwikkeling also joined in for coordination. According to project manager Lennart Harreman, the success of this project lay in the direct contact and rapid switching between the various parties involved: “We find that very important anyway: short lines of communication with the contractor and client.” And that method of working proved necessary here as well. Towards the end, the pressure on the schedule increased and PMR Projectstoffering had to switch quickly in the execution of the project. “Because we wanted to get a lot of work done in a short time, we decided to scale up and come up with alternative solutions,” says Harreman.

The biggest challenge was in the screed on the first floor.

Flawless and fast

The biggest challenge was in the floor on the first floor. “Because underfloor heating was installed there, careful consideration had to be given to the most suitable screed, in combination with the cast floor and its drying times. We discussed this carefully with all parties involved,” says Harreman. Meanwhile, PMR Projectstoffering ensured that the other work could continue as much as possible. Harreman: “Floor finishing almost always has a major impact on the schedule. We therefore do everything we can to make sure our work goes smoothly and quickly, so that the rest of the project can continue.”

Multiple floor types, one unit

In this project, PMR Projectstoffering was also able to put its other specialties to use. For example, a sleek cast floor based on biopolymer and recycled materials was chosen in the corridor areas. In the kitchen, a different product came, which is more suitable for intensive use. Both types of floor are easy to clean, in accordance with HACCP requirements.

The mix of floors required a unique approach for each zone. Harreman looks back on the project and the collaboration with pride: “Everyone put their shoulders to the wheel: from painter to furniture builder and from upholsterer to electrician.” It was precisely that collective pace that made the difference. “In an ideal situation, you had sixteen extra weeks, but we didn't have that time. The fact that we still made it together, I'm proud of that.”
