Innovation as tradition. Under that motto, Nijhuis has been building for more than 110 years. With future market demands constantly in sight, the family business is firmly committed to flexible building concepts and sustainable relationships. This has already borne many fruits, including in 2019.
Nijhuis started in 1906 as a small workshop in Rijssen and grew into a flourishing construction company with branches in Rijssen, Assen, Zwolle, Enschede and Apeldoorn. The family business, where the fourth generation is already at the helm, specializes in the development, new construction, renovation, transformation and management & maintenance of homes. Innovation is of paramount importance here. The special Building Process Development department works together with the branches on innovative solutions at process, product and project level. Teamwork, with both our own employees and (chain) partners, is central to this.

"Since 2014 we have been working in chain cooperation with housing corporations on the enormous sustainability task they face," says William Vlug, Director of Renovation at Nijhuis Apeldoorn. "For example, by 2021 all housing corporation homes must have an average energy label of B. By 2050, all their homes must have CO2-neutral. We consciously choose to enter into a long-term and intensive chain cooperation with a select number of housing corporations. This cooperation is founded on 'soft' factors such as trust and focuses on a joint learning process, in which we grow ever closer together. We also translate this way of working together to our co-makers in the chain. At the same time, we do not avoid 'hard' factors such as production targets. To achieve the aforementioned ambitions, we deliver about two thousand homes a year."

Nijhuis' vision of sustainability and renovation has taken shape in its own Trento® renovation concept. Vlug explains, "Trento® Renovation is a well-considered overall approach with room for continuous improvement. This is how we help housing corporations fulfill their renovation tasks of today and tomorrow. This starts with portfolio management. Based on the housing corporation's portfolio, we advise on the best approach. That advice ultimately leads to the concrete question. Within the applicable performance agreements with governments, we get to work on that. We peel off the project bit by bit. From the technical and financial coordination with the housing corporation and creating support among the residents to realization, management and maintenance. We use the learning experiences throughout that process to improve the hard and soft sides of the collaboration."

Velp, Street Meadows.
"The origins of the conceptual nature of Trento® Renovation lies with the concept of Trento® New Construction, a proven approach for new construction projects where pre-conceived solutions are on the shelf in a dynamic knowledge base." There is continuous cross-fertilization between the two Trento concepts based on insights and best practices gained, leading to continuous improvements. "In Apeldoorn, we focus on Trento® New construction and Trento® Renovation," Vlug said. "That has already brought us a lot of good. In the sense of continuity, but certainly also in terms of job satisfaction. We are extremely proud of our enthusiastic teams and we like to propagate that. Internally and externally."
With 2021 on the horizon, Vlug sees that more and more housing associations have the label level of their properties in order. "They are preparing for the next step, towards CO2-neutrality by 2050. We are also looking with our supply chain partners at the impact of our actions on CO2-emissions. Moreover, we will look for solutions together. Circularity, including the reuse of materials from our renovation projects, plays an important role in this." Vlug emphasizes that not only is the task toward 2050 large; the pace must also be increased significantly. "We are thinking about that now. Completely in line with our conceptual thinking and working method, we are looking for a rapidly deployable solution, with which we can optimally serve the market demand."
