Smart demolition creates sturdy student flats

Student flats with outdated facades, deteriorating in appearance. This called for a major renovation, and Van Reeuwijk BV was ready for that. "We often work together on large projects with main contractor Van Wijnen, so we were happy to be part of it again," says co-owner Niels Bruijniks.

Erwin Bruijniks purchased Van Reeuwijk BV 12 years ago, and today he runs the company together with his son Niels. "Originally we were a drilling and sawing company, but I preferred to see a broader range of services. In addition, in other fields, such as renovation, you also work with people a lot and that makes the work challenging and fun."

For Van Reeuwijk, one thing is central to the job: keeping your word. "We make sure that, left or right, we deliver the work we promise. Even if there are unforeseen challenges in a project."

Risky facade

There were challenges enough in the demolition work on the student apartments. "You don't really know what the structure of a building looks like until you open up the facade. We had to remove balconies, but at what points do you disconnect them? All in all, considerable risks. Asbestos was present in the first tower, and despite the asbestos inventory, you can always come across the material. That's why it's important that your personnel are skilled and recognize asbestos in time."

"Ultimately, we are responsible for the asbestos remediation, the interior demolition work and later the demolition of the facade," Niels Bruijniks explains. A comprehensive, but logical package if you ask him. Erwin Bruijniks adds: "In our work, those are three logical components to combine. It is better if there is one point of contact for that. Fewer links in the process, also means fewer communication errors."

Fresh look

The renovation is in full swing, and the new look of the student flats will be much improved. "With such a central location in the city, and the height of the towers, it's important that it looks good. When the project is completed, the towers will be a sight for the city again!"
