From a traditional nursing home to a modern apartment complex that meets all the requirements for good care for seniors. That transformation underwent residential care center d'Oude Raai in Amsterdam. The wall tiles from Maxus Ceramics made a functional and aesthetic contribution to this.
The renovation of d'Oude Raai was commissioned by Cordaan Foundation and carried out by Dura Vermeer. Marc Prosman Architects produced the design. "In close consultation with the users, we determined the interior of the renovated d'Oude Raai," says architect Brian de Bruijn. "Recognizability per floor was an important starting point. We implemented this in the interior, corridor walls, floor finishes and furniture. But also in the tiles of the bathrooms."
De Bruijn continues: "For the residents, including people with vision impairments, it is important that they can easily distinguish the white plumbing in the bathrooms. For this, it is desirable to create a color contrast between the walls and the plumbing. We designed this with tiled paneling in a contrasting color that matches the color palette of the floor. The colored tiles line the bathroom, creating recognition and atmosphere. Above the paneling, the tiling is white. This makes the bathroom fresh and light."
Functionality and aesthetics go hand in hand in d'Oude Raai. To give the bathrooms the intended look, several colors were chosen for the tiling from the wide range of Maxus Ceramics' Radix collection: Amber, Amazon Green, Coral Red, Turquoise and Sky Blue. Like the other colored tiles in the range, totaling more than a hundred, they have a modular design. The tiles are available in a variety of combinable sizes. This provides enormous design freedom. In addition, the tiles are competitively priced so that a unique atmosphere can be created within any budget.
