SPOT C1 and SPOT CF: Elegant facades for Amsterdam residential towers

It is the largest construction site in Amsterdam and several floors are added every week: new housing development SPOT in Amsterdam Southeast. The project consists of seven impressive residential towers with distant views over city and country. Aldowa is involved in no less than two of these projects: SPOT C1 and SPOT CF. While the first tower will be fitted with flat and profile cladding by the Rotterdam facade builder, the second tower will have an impressive facade of gold anodized panels in a special hexagonal perforation.

Special hexagon perforation 

"SPOT CF has no fewer than 23 floors, which we commissioned Pleijsier Bouw to fit with 2,950 m2 of unique gold anodized panels," says Edwin Nipius, project manager at Aldowa. "Both for the facade bands and around the balconies, we chose cassette panels with a special hexagon perforation, with a perforation degree of 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 percent. The fact that the hexagons are angled at random places creates a very dynamic facade. Due to the changing position of the sun and in combination with the golden anodization color, the facade image changes continuously, without becoming garish."

Randomly rotated

For the hexagon perforation of SPOT CF, Aldowa used a new software tool, which randomly rotated all perforations, Nipius says. "As a result, no facade panel is the same. That also makes this project very special." The assembly of all panels is done using a bed-hook system, in the form of vertical black U-profiles. "Thanks to this construction, high wind loads and temperature differences are easily withstood, while at the same time an extremely tight end result is created."

Combination of flat and profile plating

Following SPOT CF, Aldowa is also providing the engineering, production and assembly of the aluminum cladding of tower SPOT C1 in Amsterdam. "In contrast to SPOT CF, 3,800 m2 of sleek and flat panels in a high-quality white coating were chosen here, combined with 1,100 m2 of anodized brown-gray profile cladding with a stylish wave motion and 1,550 m2 of gold anodized cladding around the balconies," says Nipius. "As a result, the tower fits in nicely with the adjacent SPOT CF in appearance." All of SPOT C1's panels are mounted directly to the timber frame (hsb) substructure, he says. "That requires extra attention and good cooperation between Pleijsier Bouw and Aldowa. After all, hardly any dimensional differences can be accommodated."

Aldowa is a specialist in the engineering, production and assembly of metal cladding. From aluminum, stainless steel, SV steel, Corten steel and prepainted aluminum and steel to expanded metal and bond material. "Every project is customized," Nipius emphasizes. "To provide the best possible interpretation of this, we like to sit down with the architect and client as early as possible. For example, to translate their aesthetic wishes into a (financially) feasible and makeable design. As an organization, we can handle complex projects without any problems. SPOT C1 and SPOT CF are new and telling proof of this."
