With a height of no less than 70 meters, Woontoren State is Amsterdam's newest landmark. Residents of the 262 rental apartments and 43 owner-occupied apartments - including a number of luxury penthouses - are guided safely, quickly and efficiently to the right floors thanks to Orona's elevators. "Three elevators serve the high-rise, three the lower building section," says Hans Boekraad, Technical Commercial Advisor at Orona. "A shuttle elevator takes residents and visitors from the parking basement to the main entrance in the high-rise building, where they can switch to another elevator. This prevents visitors from entering the building unseen."

Orona was already involved in the new building at the development stage by developer VORM, to provide advice on, among other things, the capacity and sizing of the elevators. "To ensure proper configuration/belifting of the new building, we performed several capacity calculations," says Boekraad. "Seven elevators provide optimal accessibility to the building. In addition to a wheelchair-accessible shuttle elevator with a lifting capacity of 630 pounds/8 people, we engineered, installed, tuned and tested six stretcher elevators with a lifting capacity of 1,000 pounds/13 people. The high-rise elevators have a lifting speed of 1.6 meters per second; the low-rise elevators go 1 meter per second."

Once someone wants to use an elevator, the control system determines which elevator to use.

Advanced control
A so-called 3-group was installed in the high-rise building, says Boekraad. "The three elevators are next to each other in the elevator shaft and are linked together via the control group. As soon as someone wants to use an elevator, the control system determines which elevator to use. Two elevators reach the 21st floor, the third elevator continues to the penthouse on the top (22nd) floor. By means of a special priority circuit, the residents of this penthouse are given priority when this elevator is called. During the ride up or down, other residents and/or visitors cannot enter the elevator car. Moreover, thanks to a sophisticated access control system, unauthorized persons cannot gain access to the top floor."
