A beautiful residential area on the Zaan with about 550 homes and some 13,000 m2 of facilities, that is what the municipality and Waterland Real Estate would like to develop on the Meneba site in Wormerveer. To achieve redevelopment, the municipality signed a letter of intent with the developer on Wednesday, April 19. In the coming period, the feasibility of the plans will be further investigated.
"This is another typical onke spot, one of those places that is beautiful, but that far too few Zaankanters get to enjoy," said MAAK.Zaanstad alderman Gerard Ram. "This location, right on the Zaan offers enormous opportunities for development. When I imagine how here in a few years' time there can be a live/work district that makes Zaanstad more beautiful again, I get very excited. On the one hand, we want to add renewal and quality in the form of housing, offices and restaurants and on the other hand, the industrial heritage and thus the dna of Zaanstad is preserved."

Survey completed in July
The Meneba site is a former grain product distribution center that has very limited use until the end of this year. In the agreement, the parties agree to conduct a feasibility study and who has a role in it. During this phase, stakeholders such as businesses in the area will also be involved. The study is expected to be completed in July.
Characteristic flour silos
The final product of the feasibility phase is an anterior agreement in which the parties lay down the conditions under which the municipality will cooperate in the actual redevelopment of the site. This agreement also states what the housing program will be and what the urban development will look like.
It has already been agreed that the housing program should consist of housing and facilities, offices, light industry and cultural facilities, catering and possibly a hotel. The industrial heritage will be preserved wherever possible, with new uses being sought for the characteristic flour silos America (the iconic, high white cylindrical silos).
