Thoughtful installations

For the air conditioning and sanitary installations of the Short Stay Hotel, client Porta Korza set the bar high. The apartments had to be very comfortable, both in summer and in winter. They all had to be equipped with ventilation, floor heating and additional cooling. Yet Ponsioen Installatietechniek was able to far exceed this wish list.

Ponsioen Installatietechniek was the first to disconnect the building from district heating. They made the building self-sufficient by using air/water heat pumps. It then used the residual heat from the cooling systems to provide the apartments with hot tap water. Joost Koole of Ponsioen Installatietechniek explains. "Normally, excess heat in a building is discharged to the outside. In the Short Stay Hotel, we capture this heat and deploy it per apartment as a heat source for the hot tap water. From an energy point of view, this is a very favorable decision. First, there is reuse. Secondly, the hot tap water is now not pumped around the building 24/7 - resulting in unnecessary heat loss and unwanted heating - but the residual heat is deployed when one of the residents turns on their tap."

Collaboration

Koole looks back on the construction team meetings with a positive feeling. "It is precisely when all parties have the same goal that you arrive at the best solutions. For example, we worked with the architect and contractor to find the best location for the apartment installations. These are now placed so conveniently that the residents have minimal loss of space. And yet another advantage: the systems can be maintained from outside. The residents do not have to be present for this." 

Logistical windfalls

The big windfall of the project was the logistics. "To get to the construction site, everyone had to cross the streetcar tracks and then use a crawl-through route to find the construction site. We anticipated so many problems here that we considered picking up mechanics with a shuttle bus. But in practice, everyone arrived at the construction site without any problems. The parking garage under the building also proved helpful. Here we could nicely park our company vans."
