The realization of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Center in Lauwersoog brings together a diversity of expertise and craftsmanship. A crucial part of this impressive construction is the concrete work, performed by C. van der Hauw Betonbouw B.V. Superintendent Ronald Boomsma shares his experience and pride in the company's contribution to this unique project.
C. van der Hauw Betonbouw B.V., based in Joure, Friesland, is known for its craftsmanship and reliability. "We are good at complex projects," Boomsma states. With a team of some 25 men, the company works on a variety of projects in the upper provinces of the country. Its reputation for keeping appointments and delivering quality has earned it a solid position in the market.
The World Heritage Center is a multifaceted building where visitors can experience, study and research the Wadden area. C. van der Hauw Betonbouw B.V. was given the challenging task of realizing the foundation and baths for the seals. This included 550 linear meters of foundation beams, 600 cubic meters of concrete and several seal pools with a total capacity of as much as 130,000 kilograms of water. "We started the foundation on May 10, 2023, and then in stages built the pools, which stagger in height," Boomsma says. Last April, C. van der Hauw Betonbouw B.V. took the final steps on the construction site, where the company left behind an impressive feat of concrete work.
Construction of the center did not go without a hitch. It presented unique challenges, such as the previously mentioned level differences in the seal pools. "A pool often has a level floor," Boomsma says. "In this case, several small pools sit side by side; each with its own dimensions. That makes sealing the concrete challenging. But we don't let it get us down! Together with our partners, we managed this too."
The concrete work had to be done precisely to ensure that the pools were waterproof and the structures strong and durable. Thanks to the great results and given the difficulty of this project, Boomsma looks back with pride: "The building is not yet finished, but I already dare say that with all the partners we have created something very beautiful. It is very special and valuable that we were allowed to work on this new attraction," he states with satisfaction.
Cooperation with local contractors such as Bouwgroep Dijkstra Draisma and Nota Betonvlechtwerken played an important role in the success of this project. "It's great fun to work with local people on a project with such stature as this," Boomsma says. The project is an example of how joint efforts and good communication lead to excellent results.
Although C. van der Hauw Betonbouw B.V. has completed its task, the World Heritage Center has not yet been fully completed. It is scheduled to open in early 2025.
