In the realization of project KJ The Hague, Van Pommeren's full expertise comes into its own. The Veenendaal-based welding and assembly company is responsible for the production and assembly of the steel stairs, wall railings and balustrades of the roof terraces, balconies and loggias, explains project leader Dieter Ploeg. "As an additional task, we also produce and assemble a considerable amount of structural steel. For example, for suspending the timber frame and curtain wall elements. We also realize elevator shaft structures in both towers and are involved in the extension against the existing station building."
"Construction processes are increasingly shifting to the factory," Ploeg notes. "More and more materials are being delivered pre-assembled, with the aim of shortening lead times on construction, increasing safety and improving quality. As an organization, we like to think along with this." Prefabrication was also chosen wherever possible in project KJ The Hague. For example, Van Pommeren's fitters pre-assembled the balustrades for the loggias in the HSB elements. "By performing this work already in the HSB builder's factory, our fitters did not have to work at height for this. In addition, they benefited from all the advantages of a conditioned working environment."
"KJ The Hague is a true prestige project," Ploeg emphasizes. "The location, size and tight schedule make this project very challenging. Construction started in late 2023 and the complete project must be completed by the end of 2026. To meet this short lead time, the structural work is moving up a floor every week. It is up to us to follow this pace with our precast parts. In total, we are producing and assembling the balustrades for 157 balconies and 300 loggias, as well as 1,100 m¹ of balustrade for the roof terraces. We also realize seven steel stairs and 530 m¹ of wall railings for the escape stairwells."
According to Ploeg, a project like KJ The Hague is only possible with good communication and coordination. Both with TBI company J.P. van Eesteren and its team of executives and with all the side contractors. "Everyone has to put their shoulders to the project. Especially in combination with the tight schedule and the many disciplines in and around the building site. To ensure that all parts fit at once, the entire project has been worked out in 3D/BIM. In addition, we work with Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC). Our mechanics on the construction site have an iPad, on which they can consult the most up-to-date project information and drawings. This cleverly eliminates annoying surprises and clashes."
Van Pommeren has extensive knowledge and know-how in steel. "With professional passion we design and realize projects that stand out," said Ploeg. "From staircases to balustrades and (balcony) constructions and from accommodating monumental buildings by means of steel structures to taking care of complete building constructions. Because we handle the complete process from in-house, clients are assured of a single point of contact from engineering to execution."
