Demolition and (dis)assembly at height

Spaansen Bouwsystemen is an innovative family company that supplies complete shells and ready-made facades, including on-site assembly. It currently develops prefabricated facades that are visually and technically indistinguishable from traditional masonry. This is partly possible through digital innovation. Together with partner BIM4Production®, Spaansen has digitized the entire production process. With results.

“Reuse of materials, or call it circularity, is something we see more and more in our projects,” said Axel Hendriks, commercial director at Adex Group. “Indeed, we actively think along with our clients to accelerate the transition to circular construction. A great example is the redevelopment of the ABN Amro office in Amsterdam, whose computer floors, climate ceilings and glass interior walls are being given a new purpose. In Rotterdam, for example, we are working on the transformation of the well-known Rijkswaterstaat building on the Boompjes, of which many plasterboards, insulation materials and interior walls will be reused.”

Lifting platform

For the Silos, Adex removed the concrete roofs, dismantled the precast top rings and lifted out the three concrete walkways. The top rings and walkways were reinstalled after refurbishment. “The demolition of the heavy roof package was done with an electric-hydraulic demolition robot from a specially made lifting platform,” Hendriks continued. “The old concrete beams were lifted out with a 450-ton telescopic crane. A lighter crane was used for the connecting bridges and precast roof elements. By the way, the roof elements were attached to the main structure with dowels. Before these could be removed on special screw anchors, some chopping and sawing was required.”

Meanwhile, all the roof elements are in place, and so are the walkways. “Our work, carried out under the supervision of Ruud van Tamelen, is over,” concludes Hendriks. “But this was another great example of demolition combined with reuse, something we are seeing more and more often and which I see as a good development. I also say that, of course, because in thirty years we have become the market leader in circular demolition and dismantling.”
