Sustainable waterproofing solution IJ viaduct

After a century of intensive use, the IJ viaduct at Amsterdam Central Station was in need of a thorough renovation. The viaduct, which consists of a combination of steel and concrete, not only had to be preserved and reinforced, but also provided with a durable and watertight seal. Applicator SealteQ chose to apply Triflex products.

"SeatleQ is an approved processor of our products," says Mario van Ginkel of Triflex. "Our scope within the project involved supplying a waterproofing solution for the driving deck of the IJ viaduct. The Triflex Cryl R 230 membrane was deliberately chosen. Because in addition to straight surfaces, every structure, and thus also the driving deck here at Amsterdam Central, contains other types of surfaces, corners, curves, joints or dilatations. It is very important to seal joints in order to prevent the risk of leakage. The Triflex Cryl R 230 membrane is a flexible, crack-bridging and fully adhesive system that provides excellent protection against water penetration and weather influences."

Triflex Cryl R 230 membrane is a reinforced sealant for joints and dilatations, and is also widely used on balconies, galleries, terraces and wall decks, says Van Ginkel. "Failure to seal joints and dilatations can cause a lot of damage unnoticed. The moisture working its way into the structure is not immediately visible at first glance. But when it becomes visible, it is often already too late. The application of the Triflex membrane helps to extend the service life of the construction and prevents damage caused by moisture. The membrane is chemical- and UV-resistant, fast-curing and cold-applied with minimal inconvenience."
