For the new distribution center of JYSK in Lelystad, accessibility is an important part. Stepless by Guldmann supplies for this purpose two platform elevators that make the building accessible for everyone.
Originally a Danish family business, Stepless is still run by two brothers who took over the company from their father. From Enschede, Wim Nobbe manages a team of 49 employees together with Marcel Karst. “We are specialists in ceiling elevators and accessibility. Through Stepless by Guldmann we offer, among other things, plateau elevators. In this way we want to ensure that everyone can independently enter a building
inside can.”
For JYSK's new distribution center, Stepless is supplying two platform elevators. At the main entrance, there will be a custom platform elevator, which will make it possible to cover the difference in height to the entrance independently. “With the push of a button, the gate opens and you can drive up the platform, and then the elevator goes up to the level of the entrance,” says Nobbe. “This allows someone to enter the building unassisted.”
The elevator was adapted to the client's wishes. For example, color and materials match the appearance of the building. “We often deliver standard solutions, but customization was needed here. Then we coordinate with the factory and the contractor to arrive at the right execution.”

In addition to the entrance, Stepless supplies a second platform elevator for the logistics part of the building. There, the elevator bridges a height difference between two platforms, for the safe movement of transport carts. This application presented different requirements. “A standard elevator with Plexiglas is less suitable here, because it damages more quickly. Therefore, together with Willy Naessens Netherlands, Vrolijk and the manufacturer, we opted for a sturdier version that better suits intensive use.”
The project is progressing well, Nobbe says. “In weeks 20-21 we are going to install the elevators. The preparation for that is going very smoothly. We have coordinated intensively on drawings, electrics and positioning. Because in good consultation you arrive at the best solution.”
According to Nobbe, awareness around accessibility is growing. “Clients are increasingly thinking about it in advance. JYSK too, and I think that's great to see. Not everyone can just use a staircase. You really have to pay attention to that in a design.” He sees this development in a variety of projects, from distribution centers to museums and government buildings. “Accessibility should just be part of the design. This project shows how that works in practice.”
