'POWDER COATING IS OUR PASSION'

Steel has a high strength-to-weight ratio, making it well suited for structural applications. In addition, steel is durable and extremely recyclable. To benefit from these unique advantages for as long as possible, it is important to treat the steel. For example, to prevent rusting. For project KJ The Hague, Van Pommeren sought cooperation for this purpose with Overveld Coating BV, a leading company in the field of industrial surface treatment and coatings.

When it comes to preserving steel, clients have two choices: wet painting or powder coating. Overveld Coating BV's passion is powder coating, says DGA Martijn Buijs. "For project KJ The Hague, we coated approximately 760 m2 of steel tubular poles. The tubulars were made ready for blasting on arrival at the factory, with holes sealed and power wires plugged, for example. The piles were then blasted both by machine and by hand, after which the powder coating was applied."

Because the powder coating cures in an oven and at a temperature of 180°C, a very strong, impact- and wear-resistant top coat is created, he says. "Compared to wet painting, there is also no risk of dripping or blistering, which also ensures high aesthetic quality." Depending on the thickness of the steel, an oven time of 1 to 1.5 hours is often sufficient. "Because fairly sturdy profiles were used in this project, nearly 1.5 hours of oven time was required." Once finished and cooled, the steel tubular piles were carefully packed by Overveld Coating BV to prevent damage during transport and assembly. "At the end of June, the last piles were picked up," he said.

Bronze metallic

"On the one hand, the powder coating ensures that the steel tubular poles will not rust," Buijs emphasizes. "On the other hand, the coating provides a nice final finish. After all, the piles for KJ The Hague remain in sight. In accordance with Powerhouse Company's design, a special bronze metallic was chosen, produced especially for this project."

Long lengths, heavy weights

The steel tubular piles for KJ The Hague have a length of approximately 12 meters. But Overveld Coating BV can also handle longer lengths. The company even specializes in powder coating long lengths, Buijs said. "In our powder coating booths and oven, we have room for objects up to 25 meters," he says. "Our overhead cranes can also handle weights of up to 10 tons without any problems, making us the perfect partner in special projects."
