Airtight, impact rainproof and fireproof

The right combination of sealing products

At the Waterside II project in Rotterdam, Celdex is responsible for the impact rain tightness, air tightness and fire resistance of the connections. "The diversity of connections makes it a special project," says Celdex.

Ruud Robbe is Account Manager Airtight Construction for high-rise projects at Celdex. Initially, the producer of plastic foam sealing products was asked to help think about making the building rainproof and airtight. Later, requirements regarding fire resistance were added. "Usually we are involved in a project as early as the planning stage and can offer a prefabricated solution in cooperation with the supplier of the façade elements. Unfortunately, for this project it was no longer possible to include this in the production of the façade elements, so we had to come up with another solution for sealing them afterwards. In the end, it became a combination of different products."

Diversity of connections

At Waterside II, in addition to providing advice, Celdex was also responsible for the production and delivery of the sealing products and their application. The latter was outsourced to Leeveld, a regular subcontractor of STATON Bouw. "We instructed the fitters well and the installation is running like clockwork. Normally we use our own partner companies for this, but the preference of the construction company is leading in this."

What makes the project at Rotterdam's Kruiskade special for Celdex is the diversity of connections. There are fairly project-specific details. "Also the combination of air and driving rainproofing with fire safety makes it quite unique," Robbe said. "It was still quite difficult to find a good combination to kill three birds with one stone. During construction, it still sometimes turns out that what is conceived in theory does not always work one-to-one in practice."

Besides advising, producing, delivering and installing the seals, Celdex also provides quality assurance for the benefit of the contractor's reporting program. "We do that in great detail with photos at the detail level and drawing level," he says.
