Fire prevention at the National Holocaust Museum

Fire safety specialist

The National Holocaust Museum in Amsterdam will open its doors in early 2024. Fire prevention in the former Hervormde Kweekschool had to be put in perfect order. This was done by Fire Group from Westzaan.

Fire Group deals with structural fire prevention. Here you can think of fire-resistant seals, fire-resistant steel structures and architectural fire safety. Last summer, work began at the National Holocaust Museum on fire-resistant seals and covering the steel structure with sheet material. By the end of the year, the workers were finished, says Hüseyin Yüce, project manager at Fire Group. "It was quite a large project, with about 1,500 meters of steel. We fireproofed that. Other fire compartments we sealed. It's about the whole building, the whole renovation."

Good preparation

That it involves the renovation of a listed building does not matter much to Fire Group. It works more often within monuments, as well as on new construction and renovations, from residential to commercial construction. It is always up to date with the latest developments and regularly trains employees. High standards are set and the guidelines of the Building Code are closely followed. Moreover, the cooperation with client De Nijs went very well, says Yüce. "We have been working for this construction company for years. We deliver the complete package. Because we have known each other for years, communication is always good. De Nijs specifies everything clearly and they prepare projects well. This prevents unnecessary costs
be made."

Challenge

The only struggles that arose concerned location. Because the museum is in the middle of Amsterdam, transportation was more difficult. Fortunately, parking was arranged, Yüce said. "It was a long-term and beautiful project for us. The construction workers liked it, too. They said they enjoyed working on it and saw a nice challenge in it. Thanks to the trust De Nijs had in us, we were able to collaborate on this beautiful and large project."
