Installation technology and cleanrooms in combination role

The installation engineering and construction of clean rooms for the Pharmaceutical Center of the  Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital (AVL) were jointly contracted by the combination Breman Utiliteit and ClimaTech bv. The combination supplied the various technical gases, the mechanical, electrical, control, clean room and decontamination installations and the built-in package for the laboratory and clean rooms.

Roy Voss of D&E Interim Project Support had the role of project manager on behalf of the combination: "A neutral third party with expertise representing both parties towards the client." Breman and ClimaTech were also responsible as a combination for the realization of a pharmacy in the Slotervaart Hospital in 2014.

An important part of the whole process was the verification phase. Voss: "AVL, together with Royal HaskoningDHV, produced the technical design and specifications and took the tender to the market. After the prequalification, a verification phase was conducted with the Breman-ClimaTech combination over three months to identify omissions and optimize the design. On that basis, the contract was awarded. This is a nice process because you sit down with the client and the consultants, you become co-responsible for the design and optimal use is made of the implementation expertise of Breman and ClimaTech. For example, it emerged during the verification phase that we can decontaminate rooms and materials more efficiently and better dosed with a mobile decontamination unit than with a fixed setup."

GMP guidelines

Both the drug manufacturing facility and parts of the laboratory comply with strict GMP guidelines. Voss: "Before everything can be signed off according to those guidelines, you have gone through a long and complex process of testing, reviewing, physical testing, reporting, administrative processing and validation for all components. It's nice to then work with parties like Breman and ClimaTech who have proven themselves in similar projects."

Air pressure zones

Most of the building technology is housed on the fifth floor. Voss: "That's where the central air handling units, compressed air system, distributors for cooling and heat and control cabinets are located. The pharmacy building uses the cold and heat generation of the existing AVL buildings. All intakes were visualized early on and work plans were made with building management to prevent malfunctions of in-service systems. A special system was also installed for pressure control in the laboratories and clean rooms, where different pressure classes prevail. This system ensures that wind loads on the facade do not affect the air pressure hierarchy in the building and thus do not disrupt the production process.

Flush

The laboratory areas and preparation pharmacy are finished to the highest standards. Flush finished steel walls with a coating suitable for the VHP process (disinfection with hydrogen peroxide), among other things, were chosen. The architect included a lot of glass in the design; these are also flush incorporated into the walls. To optimize internal logistics, ClimaTech installed pass-through cabinets and pass-through refrigerators.

Space to build

In the role of subsidiary contractor with construction contractor De Vries en Verburg and MER specialist All IT Rooms, the cooperation was excellent. Voss: "That starts with giving each other the space to build. We agreed that the finishing work would proceed from bottom to top, just like the structural work, so that, for example, you don't have to work around packages of drywall when installing the infrastructure for the installations. That way everyone can make meters, which also benefits quality. If you arrange things like that well among yourselves, you see mostly happy faces on the construction site."
