Hans Meisters is a 63-year-old foreman at Velox, working on a Hurks construction project in Maastricht. Hans has been working in construction since 1983, starting as a junior carpenter and eventually advancing to superintendent. Hans has used his experience over the years to help younger people in the trade and has even worked as an apprentice. He has seen the changes in the construction industry, such as the use of cranes, improved safety and working conditions, and the importance of lifting.
You learn real construction from craftsmen outside in the field.
Hans is currently working on a project to build 500 student housing units spread over five buildings. In terms of content, Hans is responsible for all logistical work on the construction site. "I do this together with an immediate colleague. He more inside and I more outside. And of course we support each other in our roles. In addition, I am responsible for quality control and contact with subcontractors."
On construction you have to deal with different languages and cultures. Meisters: "Here you mainly deal with Polish and Romanian professionals. Usually I get by in English and German. And sometimes a word of French." It is important for Hans to build good relationships with all parties involved to create trust and respect.
Respect and trust are the basic ingredients for optimal cooperation on the construction site.
Naturally, sustainability is taken into account. Think of the application of solar panels, building with a very high insulation value, heat recovery and the reuse of old materials.
"I actually drive home every day feeling good. And especially when we have achieved our goal for the day."
