Multifunctional roofs for AFAS Experience Center

In Leusden, a very impressive project has been under construction for several years: the 62,000 m²(!) AFAS Experience Center of the Dutch software company of the same name. A large part of the flat roofs are fitted with Kingspan Unidek flat roof EPS insulation boards, in varying compressive strengths due to the multifunctional nature of the roofs.

The new AFAS Experience Center is anything but a standard office complex. No, it is a real campus with a diversity of striking buildings that are all connected. Experience is therefore central to the design. Experience for the 450 employees, clients and visitors alike. Part of the impressive elongated structure is also a restaurant and theater with 800 seats. In total, according to Ferry Schaap of Kingspan Unidek, the complex has some 7,500 m² of flat roofs, some of which serve different functions in the project. Reason for roofing contractor ZND NEDICOM to fit a large part of those roofs with Kingspan Unidek flat roof EPS insulation boards.

EPS is fully recyclable

"The use of EPS for flat roofs is often favored because of its high compressive strength, low specific gravity and high insulation value," says Schaap. "Several flat roofs of the AFAS Experience Center have a 'dual function' and act, for example, as terraces, walkways or 'supports' for PV panels. Some of the flat roofs will also be fitted with greenery. The beauty of EPS is that we can supply it in various compressive strengths to suit the intended application. With a thickness varying between 200 and 240 millimeters, we achieve an Rc value of 6.0. EPS is also extremely sustainable with a low LCA score (Life Cycle Analysis). It is fully recyclable and will even be fully circular in one and a half to two years when the Polystyreneloop factory in Terneuzen is put into operation. Here, EPS from construction and packaging materials will be completely reduced to its original raw material."
