'New construction of AVL pharmacy building was beautiful and challenging'

On February 24, De Vries en Verburg delivered the realization of a new pharmacy building to the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital (AVL). The new building measures 54 by 18 meters, has a floor area of approximately 7,500 m² and is divided into various functions. The first floor houses the goods reception center and general areas; the 1st floor houses a new EIR room and the 2nd through 4th floors house the pharmacy. Floor 5 is an engineering floor and the top floor will house offices.

The new building was realized on top of an existing basement, the deck of which was demolished by De Vries en Verburg. "We then carried out all the piling work in the existing basement basin and realized the piles and cast-in-place floors," says project manager André de Geus. "From the first floor, we opted for a prefabricated shell with Airdeck® floors." The main load-bearing structure of the pharmacy building consists of load-bearing precast concrete facades and a center row of columns. "A combination of metal stud walls and steel facades was chosen in the building. Except for the clean rooms on the 3rd and 4th floors, we finished the new building with system ceilings, PVC flooring and glass fleece wallpaper. The facade is finished with the same natural stone as the other new building parts of the AVL, creating a harmonious whole."

Concrete Monitoring

During the new construction, De Vries en Verburg faced several challenges. "In the initial phase, we spent a lot of time driving the piles, which were difficult to get into the ground," De Geus says. "And the construction also created challenges. Whereas normally precast construction methods opt for hollow-core slabs, these floors could not handle the loads in the pharmacy building. Therefore, structural engineer SWINN used weight-saving and four-sided Airdeck® floors prescribed. However, incorporating wet floors into a precast system slowed our progress considerably. By applying concrete monitoring, we were still able to keep this cycle as short as possible. In order to ensure that the installer could start his work as soon as possible, we started very early on with the screeds and sealing off the facade recesses."

Familiar face

The pharmacy building is not the first project De Vries en Verburg has undertaken for AVL. Since 2001, the Stolwijk-based contractor has been involved in the construction of the existing main building and radiotherapy, followed in 2013 by the expansion of the ORs, ICUs and day treatment, among others.
