Ruitenberg Ingredients | Ruinerwold

State-of-the-art production site for inspiring food solutions

A recognizable building with spacious, light and conveniently arranged production areas that meet the latest technology regarding quality, food safety and environment. That is characteristic for the new production hall with which Ruitenberg Ingredients expanded its location in Ruinerwold.

Ruitenberg Ingredients is an innovative company that develops and produces a wide range of products for the food industry. Customers can go there for fillings, sauces, batters and binders, among other things. But especially also to get inspiration in the field of flavors, textures and new technologies.

New, modern production hall
Ruitenberg Ingredients has a total of four sites in Twello, Ruinerwold and Peize. Due to continued growth, the production location in Ruinerwold became too small. This location, a factory building from 1926, was also outdated. "In 2012, we first started thinking about new construction," says operational manager Jos van de Werken of Ruitenberg Ingredients. "A few years ago we started the extensive preparations."

Bessels Architekten has been involved in the project from the first plans, as has builder Aan de Stegge Twello. "Together we were also already involved in the realization of the main office in Twello," says architect Mandy Doeve of Bessels Architects. "That project went very pleasantly."

'Functional design based on logistics flows'.

High degree of diversity
The exterior of the new building in Ruinerwold is designed in Ruitenberg house style, This is reflected in both the use of color and materials. For example, the facade is made of black brick with a recessed joint, and the grid of the Twello awning is used as window shutters. In contrast, the awning in Ruinerwold has a white fascia, which together with the shutters refers to the rural character of the area. In terms of layout and layout, the design is fully aligned with the activities and logistical flows in the new production hall. "In Ruinerwold, we make four different types of products," Van de Werken explains. "These are liquid smoke for smoked products such as smoked sausage, liquid licorice root extract for licorice manufacturers, bakery fillings such as ham/cheese and broccoli/salmon, and meat substitutes. All different products, each with their own spaces and requirements. For example, we use many different types of water and we have areas with temperatures ranging from -20 to +80 degrees Celsius. The new building is therefore characterized by a high degree of diversity."

Logical arrangement
"Designing production areas for the food industry is all about food safety, hygiene and routing," Doeve says. "Among other things, you have to deal with zoning related to hygiene requirements, routes of products, passenger traffic, waste and packaging. These flows must remain well separated. To this end, a traffic zone was created that clearly separates the building into two parts: production areas on one side and storage areas on the other. In this traffic corridor, each product is always packaged, ensuring food safety. Above this spacious traffic zone is a corridor with the necessary installations placed as far as possible outside the production area. The corridor also provides access to the walkable hygienic ceilings, where there is an extensive piping system.

The facade is executed in a black brick with recessed joint. The grid of Twello's solar awning returns here as window shutters.

Spacious, light and safe
The design also focuses on a pleasant experience of the property. The spaces are spacious and light, with windows and voids. Plenty of daylight enters through both roof and facade, and there is plenty of visibility to the outside. The separation of traffic flows provides safety both inside and outside. "These aspects contribute to the building's BREEAM 'Outstanding' certification," Doeve said. "So do the solar panels, energy-efficient installations and sustainable measures such as heat recovery. All in all, the new production hall is a fine building, which we realized in good cooperation with Ruitenberg Ingredients and Aan de Stegge Twello."
