Engineering and realizing sprinkler systems in high-rise projects is specialist work. After all, the extinguishing water must bridge a great height in the event of a fire. During the construction of the 159-meter-high The BaanTower in Rotterdam, developers RED Company and Redevco are relying for this on the knowledge and expertise of FIRE STOP Holland, which has already successfully realized five similar high-rise projects and specializes in this type of solutions.
The BaanTower will be fully equipped with a sprinkler system. “In total, we are installing 4,250 sprinkler heads in the apartments, residence halls, corridors and even in the bicycle parking. These heads detect, signal and extinguish or control incipient fires,” says Irek Mulka, project manager of sprinkler installations at FIRE STOP Holland. “What's special about this project is that the sprinkler pipes are cast into the concrete, which places strict requirements on both engineering and installation coordination. To avoid clashes with other installations, we worked out and coordinated the entire project in 3D/Revit.”
“The automatic sprinkler system will be fed from the water cellar, where 200 m³ of firefighting water will be stored,” Mulka continued. “This basement will also contain a pump room with large horizontal multi-stage pumps, electric and diesel driven, with four pressure stages. These pumps can supply firewater up to and including the fiftieth floor.”
