The ARTIS Aquarium: restoration of a wonder of the world

SDR Elektrotechniek designs, installs and maintains electrical installations. The company works on many projects in and around Amsterdam: hotels, media companies and museums, hospitals, offices, schools, homes and ARTIS, for example. The current restoration of the ARTIS Aquarium is a unique project. "It is not often that we have to take into account a penguin enclosure," says Erik Poelman, project leader from SDR.

The ARTIS Aquarium dates back to 1881. Over the years, the building has been severely affected by salt water from the basins. And so it is time for a major restoration and preservation. Or as ARTIS itself calls it: the restoration of a wonder of the world. ARTIS also wants to use the space for events. SDR Elektrotechniek is working with Salverda, Breman and Hellebrekers, among others, on this unique project.

Each to his task

The tasks are clearly divided: Among other things, SDR installs the electrical, data, fire alarm and security systems, cameras, PV panels and (emergency) lighting in the building. It also ensures that the designs meet standards. "And Hellebrekers, for example, knows exactly what to consider for the water-side installations specifically required for the aquariums. After all, that's a separate piece of technology. We then make sure they get the right electrical installations," Poelman said.

Monumental building

The biggest challenge with this project? "That the aquarium is a listed building: the walls and ceilings have to remain untouched," Poelman says. "Also, the aquarium is adjacent to a penguin enclosure, so we have to take noise standards into account so the animals are not bothered. That makes the whole thing a bit more complex."

But good preparation is half the battle. "We have been designing and drawing since last summer. Partitions have been put in place so the noise is dampened. Now we are slowly moving toward developing our plans." The restoration is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025. "Despite the challenges, the time frame is in line with other projects. Incredibly cool that we get to be part of such an important project!"
