On Urkerweg in Emmeloord (NL) there are four flats, Nijenbeek, Hulkesteijn, Verlehorst and Old Putten. These flats were in need of maintenance and a future-proof update. An extensive job in which the apartments were completely renewed on the outside and made future-proof. The old facades were replaced with new, well-insulated facades. Architectural sliding panels from DUCO on the facade prevent overheating during the hot summer months.
The four buildings stand on an access road to Emmeloord, in a picture-perfect location. Although well maintained, the modernist apartment buildings from the 1970s are not particularly energy efficient or sustainable. Housing corporation Mercatus wanted to give the flats a second lease of life with a focus on sustainability, housing quality and an aesthetic upgrade. The new outer shell of the buildings reflects the character of the past, the DNA of the Northeast Polder. The apartments will be very well insulated and made airtight, significantly improving living comfort.
"As a chain partner of Mercatus, we mainly take care of the technical side of the project," says business office manager Pepijn Harleman of Talen Vastgoedonderhoud. "In consultation with the residents, we thought along with the architect on the design, taking into account the prominent location of the flats. We arrived at a powerful facade image, consisting of sleek facades in a gray tone combined with white, eye-catching frames."
"We have to insulate the flats and the windows well today," says Mercatus project manager Durk Grouwstra. "But with this better insulation and airtightness, you also have to watch out for overheating from solar radiation. The priority function of windows is to let in qualitative daylight. Moreover, they provide contact between our residents and their outdoor environment. So properly addressing solar radiation is necessary. And this is where solar shading comes in."
The DucoSlide architectural blinds blend seamlessly into the modern ensemble, and the wooden slats add a unique touch to the facade appearance. The invisible fixing of the slats within the frame offers a second aesthetic added value. The wooden accents of the sliding panels stand out fully in the green surroundings. In addition to DucoSlide sliding panels, DucoGrille Solid M 30Z slat grilles were also used.
