Lighthouse Eindhoven: Aluminum and Steel in Perfect Harmony

In Strijp-S, the creative heart of Eindhoven, Lighthouse—also known as the Niko Tower—is rising. This 109-meter-tall residential tower adds a new landmark to the city’s skyline. With 333 rental apartments, commercial spaces, and a distinctly sculptural form, the project is a prime example of modern architecture. Jonkers Hekwerk & Trappen and Jonkers Stalen Kozijnen made a significant contribution to this project through the engineering, production, and installation of high-quality steel and aluminum elements that combine safety, aesthetics, and sustainability.

Jonkers Hekwerk & Trappen and Jonkers Stalen Kozijnen, just like Jonkers Bouwverankering, are part of Jonkers Bouwmetaal—a family-owned business through and through that, over nearly forty years, has grown into a trusted partner in the development and supply of steel for the construction industry. For the Lighthouse project, the companies are engineering and installing over 30 metric tons of aluminum and 25 metric tons of steel.

Transparency and rhythm in the facade

“The balconies and rooftop terraces are Lighthouse’s outdoor rooms,” says Roelof Jonkers, commercial director of Jonkers Bouwmetaal. “Our glass railings and parapet handrails create a light, airy look and maximum transparency, while the louvered railings add strength and rhythm to the design. This enhances the sculptural facade and ensures comfort and safety for the residents.”

Vertical accents and high-quality finishes

The facades of Lighthouse are characterized by strong vertical lines, Jonkers explains. “With our specially developed aluminum facade cladding featuring vertical channels, we seamlessly align with this rhythm. On the ground floor, the architect opted for an aluminum ceiling and matching facade cladding, again with vertical channels. This creates a harmonious design. Moreover, the commercial base gives the building a high-end look, ensuring a smooth transition from the exterior to the interior.”

Safety and Consistency in Detail

Jonkers has also made a significant contribution to the interior. For example, the fire-resistant steel window frames in the stairwells ensure maximum safety. Moreover, they meet the strictest standards, according to Jonkers. “In addition, the stairwells are equipped with slatted railings and handrails, allowing the exterior aesthetic to extend indoors and creating a robust, durable finish.”

Technically robust, aesthetically refined

“Our products not only contribute to safety and functionality, but also enhance the architectural concept of De Zwarte Hond,” Jonkers summarizes. “With sustainable materials, meticulous detailing, and comprehensive execution from design to installation, we have fulfilled the ambitions of this project.”

“Through our contribution to Lighthouse, we’re demonstrating how steel and aluminum make a difference in modern high-rise buildings,” Jonkers concludes. “We’re proud to have had the opportunity to contribute to this new icon for Eindhoven—a landmark that combines safety, sustainability, and design.”
